Composition

Why study composition? We all have creative ability and, regardless of our confidence in that ability, composing is within our reach. Composing allows us to capture and refine the sounds and ideas that fill our imagination and to find new ones that we hadn't imagined before. Our compositions uniquely describe our personality and life experiences.

From an educational perspective, composition assignments activate our piano performance, music theory, and history knowledge, further growing and reflexively strengthening and enhancing that knowledge.

What to expect. In composition lessons we learn musical styles, compositional techniques, and the special abilities and limitations of different musical instruments and voices. Each year, all except my first-year piano students work on one, small composition. We do most of this work during the lesson and occasionally as homework. Students who are registered for private, composition-only lessons should expect 1 - 5 hours of homework per week depending on the their level. They should also expect to produce several pieces of music for different instruments over the course of one year.

All student compositions will be performed by myself or other professional musicians at our year-end Spring Recital. Students may choose to participate in composition workshops and competitions.

How much do lessons cost? Composition is included in weekly piano lessons. Students can also register for weekly, private composition-only lessons, either 30 or 60 minutes in duration. Lesson fees are found in my current Studio Policy.

How do I register for lessons? Please                       to set up a phone or in-person interview to discuss lesson scheduling and goals.
